Lachey began his singing career in the mid-1990s, when he began singing at Kings Island with his friend Justin Jeffre. He and Jeffre then joined forces with his brother Drew, and fourth member Jeff Timmons, to form the boy band 98 Degrees. They were discovered by music manager Paris D’Jon, and they signed to Motown Records. Together, 98 Degrees released the albums “98 Degrees” (1997), “98 Degrees and Rising” (1998), “This Christmas” (1999), “Revelation” (2000), “2.0” (2013), and “Let It Snow” (2017). The group went on an extended hiatus from 2003 to 2012.
In the summer of 2003, Lachey starred with his wife at the time, Jessica Simpson, in the MTV reality show “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica”.
