In 2009, McKayla placed 27th in the all-around competition and third in the vault at the Visa Championships. In 2010, placed seventh in the all-around at the CoverGirl Classic and third in the all-around, first on vault, seventh on balance beam, and fourth on floor at the Visa Championships. Later that year, Maroney placed first in the vault and floor competitions at the Pan American Championships. She began her senior career in 2011, winning the all-around competition at the City of Jesolo Trophy in March. That year, McKayla also placed fifth on floor and sixth on balance beam at the CoverGirl Classic, and at the Visa Championships, she placed second in the all-around, first on vault, seventh on balance beam, and fifth on floor. The American team finished in first place at the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, and Maroney placed first on vault. In 2012, she won the vault competition at the Secret U.S. Classic and suffered a nasal fracture and concussion after falling while warming up at the Visa Championships. She later competed at the Olympic Trials and placed seventh in the all-around competition, first on vault, and fifth on floor, earning a spot on the team that would compete at the Summer Olympics. In July 2012, McKayla and her teammates graced the cover of “Sports Illustrated.”

In late July 2012, Maroney achieved her dream and competed at the Summer Olympics in London. Her vault score in the team vault was the highest of the competition and helped Team U.S.A. win the gold in the all-around competition. Though McKayla was expected to win a gold medal in the vault final, she fell on her second vault and walked away with a silver medal instead. In September 2012, she fractured her left tibia at a Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions event, and the injury required that she have two screws inserted in the tibia and temporarily wear an immobilizer. Maroney returned to the tour in early October, wearing leg and foot splints. In 2013, she was a judge for the Miss America pageant and entered into a sponsorship deal with Adidas Gymnastics.
